Choir to sing at Carnegie

Columbia will be represented this weekend at Carnegie Hall as 10 members of the Columbia High School Concert Choir sing at the prestigious New York venue.

Director Kim Walley and students will leave early Thursday to participate in the Sunday performance of Dan Forrest’s “Jubilate Deo.”


Fires quickly snuffed

It was a busy weekend for the Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department, which quickly extinguished two house fires over the weekend.

Sunday at 6:51 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to 1450 Lampton Hilltop Road, according to Chief Cole Robbins.





Fire vote nixed

Marion County won’t hold a referendum on additional fire property taxes this year because the costs could exceed $24,000 and deadlines are fast approaching.

Circuit Clerk Janette Nolan, election commissioners, fire officials and the Board of Supervisors met Wednesday, and all were in agreement that it was not feasible.



Summer program mulled

The Columbia Board of Aldermen is considering allowing a faith-based organization to operate a summer program at the Duckworth Center.

Antonio and Cora Johnson of Reign in Life Ministries submitted a proposal to use it from June 4 through July 6, five days per week from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
