Lela Suzanne “Sue” Carmichael Horton

85, Enterprise

Graveside services were held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 15, 2017, at the Carmichael Cemetery in DeSoto for Lela Suzanne “Sue” Carmichael Horton, 85, of Enterprise, who died on Friday, May 12, at her residence from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).

She was a native Mississippian who loved God, her family, former students and friends faithfully, creatively and with generous hospitality. She was born on Aug. 10, 1931, in Greenville. She was the daughter of the late Calvin Ellzey Carmichael and the late Clyde Smith Carmichael. Her family moved to Columbia to live with her grandmother, Jessie Smith, after the death of her father in 1936. She was a graduate of Columbia High School in 1949 and a 1953 graduate of Belhaven College.

A former resident of Baton Rouge, La., she retired as an elementary teacher, was actively involved in historical preservation efforts and a master of house and garden. Those who visited her were to be blessed as much by the bounty of the tables she sat as by the beauty of her homes. Whatever she planted, bloomed and enriched the lives of all who knew her.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Horton and brother, Gilbert Carmichael.

Survivors include her daughters, Angela Horton Guffey (Robert) of Norfolk, Va. and Patricia Horton Tipton (Kenneth) of Baton Rouge, La.; four grandchildren, Kyle Guffey, Michael Tipton (Sarah), Kendyl Tipton Brunet (Jude) and Susanna Guffey; four great grandchildren; her beloved sister, Myrna Carmichael Horton; her sister-in-law, Deanie White Carmichael and a grand multitude of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial donations may be sent to the ALS Association (www.alsa.org), Sta-Home Hospice of Meridian or LSU Baptist Campus Ministry, Baton Rouge, La.
