Two injured in school bus accident; MHP investigates

The investigation into a Friday afternoon school bus wreck in Marion County continues, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol Spokesman MSgt. Brent Barfield.

A Columbia School District school bus carrying 56 people, including students and parents was sideswiped by a vehicle on its way home from a field trip at the John Ford Home in Sandy Hook as part of this weekend’s fourth annual Ford Encampment. Two people were injured including a parent on the school bus and the driver of the vehicle.

No schoolchildren were injured in the accident, according to Barfield. The students were from Columbia Primary, which is the District’s kindergarten through third-grade school.

Names of the injured are being withheld while the investigation continues.

The driver of the vehicle was transported to Marion General Hospital and then transferred to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg for "a medical issue," Barfield said.

Charges are pending lab results.
