Columbia High School opened district play last Friday with a 47-27 homecoming win over Wesson.
Coach James Harvey said the Wildcats (3-3, 1-0) played well after having a week off before picking up the pigskin at Walter Payton Field at Gardner Stadium in front of a large crowd.
Over the past couple of weeks, East Marion (16-1, 6-0) has asserted itself as the team to beat in Class 1A/3A Region 7, while Columbia (7-13, 3-3) and West Marion (5-9, 2-4) are trying to keep pace with Salem (12-4, 4-1) for the coveted second spot in the district standings.
While Columbia (2-3) was on a bye last Friday night, the Wildcats got a chance to learn more about their first district opponent — Wesson (4-2).

Despite a 38-21 loss at the hands of the Taylorsville Tartars, Columbia High School football coach James Harvey saw things he liked last Friday.

At 2:22 p.m., moments after tornado warnings had been issued, an EF-3 tornado touched down in the heart of our community.
Now into my third month in town, I feel like I’m officially a Columbian: I had my first documented encounter with a white squirrel.
My wife and I had spotted one scampering alongside our driveway several times when we arrived home, but we didn’t know the story and thought it was just an albino.
